Hines College of Architecture and Design seeks qualified candidates for Director of Undergraduate Architecture, to be appointed with tenure. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a broad understanding of the profession of architecture and its related disciplines as well as providing evidence of teaching and leadership roles. We encourage candidates with multidisciplinary interests to apply. The Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design offers its students and faculty a platform of integrated disciplines—Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Industrial Design—that work together to negotiate the complexities of contemporary design practice, making extensive use of our state-of-the-art digital and fabrication facilities. Situated in the heart of one of the most diverse and fast-growing cities in the United States, our College promotes the idea of the city as a laboratory for research, where design is considered a form of critical thinking, calling forth innovative solutions for contemporary conditions. ResponsibilitiesThe incoming director will oversee the daily operation of the undergraduate architecture program, collaborate with the Director of Industrial Design, the Director of Interior Architecture and the Director of Graduate Studies. In addition the Director will work with faculty members to develop and implement curriculum. The Director will be responsible for supervising, supporting and facilitating the work of the faculty and will represent the architecture program to both internal and external constituencies. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at least one course per semester and to apply leadership skills toward strategic planning for the program. The Director is appointed by the Dean of the College, for a five-year term. Specific responsibilities include:
- Advancing the development of architectural pedagogy in the Undergraduate Program
- Engaging in research or practice
- Assisting in the development of the program budget
- Assisting in the recruitment and hiring of faculty, staff and adjunct faculty
- Assisting and advising in various tasks relating to recruitment, admissions, graduation and internal / external communication
- Overseeing accreditation reviews
QualificationsQualified candidates for the position must have a terminal degree in architecture with professional licensure. A strong record of design practice, scholarship, and teaching experience is desired. Candidates must present superior design work, along with strong communication and collaboration skills.
